GBA Wishlist

Okay so I’m thinking about picking up a GBA so I can play those games on a real console instead of emulated. I had a silver and then a blue GBA SP as a kid. I’m torn between a modded original GBA or an SP, especially the triforce design. Anyways, I wanted to list some games I’d actually play on a GBA and figured I might as well post it online to look back on later, not sure if the notes will even make sense to anyone but me. Feel free to add recommendations. Also I had so much fun making this list that I’m thinking about going through and doing a similar list for the DS, 3DS, GameCube (on my WiiU), Wii (on my Wii U), Wii U, PS3, PS1 (on my PS3 or Vita), Vita, PSP (on my Vita) since those are the consoles I can currently play on original (or close enough) hardware.

Big hitters:

* Advance wars - 1 and 2, never really tucked into them past the tutorial before and having a real GBA would really force me to take them nice and slow.

* Fire emblem - multiple, I could even grab a fan tran of FE6

* Drill dozer - doubt I’d have rumble on a flash cart but this would have a lot more charm on a physical gba

* Pokémon mystery dungeon - again, I think I’d have more patience with this slow game on a real gba

* Chain of memories - been meaning to play this anyways

* FF5-6 patched - fan patched because of the audio, but I think these have exclusive content on a GBA vs snes/ps1 and I wanna play these games on a non-modern screen

* FF Tactics Advance - again, just feels more charming on a small screen

* MM battle network - been meaning to play these anyways

* NES Classics - not the best way to play these games, but kind of a novelty

* Super Mario advance 1-4 - would be so funny to play the Wii U rom of SMA4, but also I grew up with that game

* Kuru Kuru Kururin - always one I use to test a new emulator setup, easy fun

* Tony Hawk - had a recent Tony Hawk phase, these ones are supposed to be good

* Doom - novelty

* Game and watch gallery 4 - great for testing/pick up and play

* F zero/Mario kart - again, very pick up and play

* Mario golf advance tour - loved the gba Mario tennis and I should play this one too

* Wario Land 4 - had a wario land phase recently and stopped mid-3

* Golden Sun - I did actually do the first hour or so on Wii U but this game belongs on handheld

* Warioware - the definition of pick up and play

* Minish Cap - I feel like this game is good enough to be worth playing removed from the original console so it’s doubly worth playing on a real one

* Mother 3 - Cmon, this one is a gimme. Playing the fan Tran on a real GBA would be such an own on Nintendo

Lesser:

* Swordcraft Story - started this on vita, pretty cute

* Banjo Kazooie/Pilot - because I played nuts and bolts as a kid

* Bit generations - don’t have the ROM’s currently but I love a simple game

* Boktai - patched for the sensor but cmon it’s Hideo

* Bomberman - they made so many of these for GBA

* Bookworm - I’m a simple man

* Car battler joe - I always see this mentioned

* Starfy - fan trans

* Various SNES ports (DKC) - I had DKC as a kid but also there’s sooo many snes ports

* Dr Mario & Puzzle League - pick up and play

* Yugioh - I had one as a kid and got into these recently

* GTA - I think this one is a GTA3 prequel?

* Various fighting games (MK, GG, Tekken, SF) - novelty

* Jet grind radio - even if just for the music

* Finding Nemo - had as kid

* Lady Sia - seen on lists

* Sabrewulf - rare! And seen on lists

* That one xcom game (rebelstar) - I mean, I do like xcom

* LttP - never played it, I should look up version differences first

* Return of the king - seen on lists, seems better than it should be

* Pac-Man - various here, pick up and play

* Polarium - polarium DS is cute

* Zone of the Enders - I’ve been meaning to play this and the 2 main games

* Gunstar super heroes - kind of a shmup, I stan treasure honestly

* Sword of mana - I think this is a remake of the first game? So it’s safe to start here?

* Sigma star saga - read about this in Nintendo power as a kid, seems like a shmup rpg hybrid

* Hamtaro - nobody will shut up about how good this game is for some reason

* Pinball of the dead - seen this one praised a few times

* Chu chu rocket - I wasn’t convinced until I saw that it had 2500 user created levels

* Tactics Ogre - surprised to see this so high on metacritic when I didn’t know it existed before

* Ninja Five O - no one will shut up about this game

* Various racing games

* Asterisk and obelisk XL - impressively 3D

* Harvest moon - maybe the tiny screen will finally convince me to have the patience to farm

* Activision Anthology - again, just for the novelty

* 3 Castlevanias - only actually beat Aria

* Mega Man Zero - hard, maybe too hard

* Sonic Advance 1-3 - had 3 as kid, love these

* Kirby - didn’t beat amazing mirror, wouldn’t mind trying to 100% nightmare

* Metroid Zero Mission/Fusion - classics. Perfection.

* Pokémon RSE/FRLG - always due for a replay

* Pokémon pinball - my go to testing game

* Mario tennis power tour - never did beat hard mode. And it’s been a while

* Mario Vs donkey kong - played as kid

You'll find a mixture of graffiti, gritty clutter, and slick, gunmetal tech. There's plenty of LCD screens too, in fearsome-red and 2077-yellow for different moods. There are holographic projectors waiting for a character token to be placed on-top, and there is more litter than you'll know what to do with.

This collection is heavily inspired by the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077 video game, as well as the Akira and Ghost in the Shell movies, the Shadowrun and XCOM games, and our modern-day cities of Tokyo and New York.

I hope this helps in your long wait for Cyberpunk 2077! I always scratch the itch when I'm waiting for a game release by running homebrewed one-shots for my group. Hopefully this pack will help you out if you want to give it a go. :)

Opinions on video games I played in the long, long decade of 2020

Fire Emblem Three Houses – Cindered Shadows: wow this came out in 2020 huh. The side story was a great campaign, and I should really give the game another run to try using the characters in the main game.

Warframe – Scarlet Spear: this event was honestly pretty tedious and the all-or-nothing score bonuses felt really punishing. And to think this was still the better way of getting Arcane upgrades

XCOM: Chimera Squad: oh wow this also came out in 2020. This feels like they didn’t want to commit to a full XCOM 3 yet but wanted to make something so they could try experimenting with new gameplay elements and concepts. If that’s what they intended, I really like that approach.

Megaman Zero/ZX Collection: A really solid compilation of some mostly solid GBA/DS games, with quite a few options and enhancements to make the early-series jank a bit more tolerable. The added bonuses like the art gallery and the challenge mode are very nice extras as well.

Streets of Rage 4: I was never expecting this game to happen. I was less expecting this game to come out and actually be not just good, but incredible. Now I’m gonna wonder what other old Sega series gets resurrected from the void...

Blaster Master Zero: A nice throwback/re-imagining of the NES original that does a lot to forge its own identity. Still need to try out the sequel, I’ve heard good (and weird) things about it.

Mighty Gunvolt Burst: the existence of this game single-handedly justifies and redeems the existence of Mighty No. 9.

Rise of Industry: A nice fun little resource management/logistics game. Gives me slight Transport Tycoon vibes.

Half-Life 2 – Episode 1 + 2: yes it took me almost 15 years to get around to finishing HL2 and playing the Episodes and that’s only because if I didn’t raocow was going to do it first. Overall pretty good, but I think I can go without a Strider fight sequence ever again

Half-Life Source: yeah I can see why people say this is a janky port

Black Mesa: For a fanmade project, this is absolutely incredible. The sheer number of ways that it improves and iterates on the original is astounding, and the new take on Xen is utterly mindblowing to experience

Slay the Spire: A nice fun diversion, especially on the days where I’m too worn out to focus on anything more mentally involved.

Final Fantasy XIV – 5.2 through 5.4: honestly if 5.3 had been the end of the storyline like they originally set out to do, I would have been fine with that, it was an excellent conclusion. However, with what 5.4 is setting up, I am eager to see what 6.x might hold (and hoping that it doesn’t suffer for Yoshida being involved elsewhere with directing XVI)

Phantasy Star Online 2 (NA Version): on launch? Worst experience I’ve had trying to install and run a game. Once Ep4 and the Steam release came out? Good. Once Ep5 came out? Great. Once Ep6 Pt1 came out? Excellent. I can nitpick some of the item name translations to hell and back, but the story dialogue and voice acting is very good.

Command & Conquer Remastered: I was expecting over and over for EA to find a way to screw this up. Somehow they didn’t, although I imagine that Petroglyph, Lemon Sky, and the community doing most of the work kept things on track. A very good remaster of a good RTS duology.

Tropico 6: I finally got around to grabbing this off my wishlist. It’s got a lot of improvements and additions over what was there in 5, and the series flavor is still present and accounted for, but there’s still a lot of stuff from 3/4 that I miss.

Touhou Spell Bubble: Picked this up after watching it played by HoloEN, and I’m enjoying it a lot even though I haven’t really touched rhythm games in a long time. Really good music selection, although it has the ‘early Windows era bias’ a lot of derivative works have.

Unreal Engine- Art Gallery Evaluation

Interfaces

The interface on the Unreal engine is very easy because it felt like a normal way to fly around and interact with the surroundings. The software I used in this project seemed easier at the start but when you get more in-depth it gets somewhat difficult. So overall I would have to say that Unreal engine’s interface and menus are easier than other software I have used such as illustrator.This is because it has very easy tabs and folders to access and the Unreal engine has the capability to have a lot of space to have fun with it and be creative and accurate. This is shown with the same software making legendary games like Borderlands 2, Bioshock and XCOM.

Making a Landscape

 While making the landscape i was confident in using the tools that were provided and I am confident in finding the tools for the task i wanted to do. Next time I would like to increase my understanding of the tools and be able to use them even better so I can make better landscapes like better hills, mountains, lake and oceans so i can integrate them into the main part of the project. I could get better at the landscaping by asking for more tips from my teacher (Owain) or i could watch tutorials online or on YouTube for tips and tricks to the trade.

Making a Gallery

 I created the gallery by making the spiral stairs first because then i could gauge the height I am having the floor of the gallery. In this time i also made some concepts for a tree to be copied and pasted down a cobblestone path that i also made for where the player spawns. After this part I placed down a plane concept of the floor walls and roof and textured them. After i did all this I finished the outside by making the path have bushes next to it instead of tree’s and at this point i also finished my fountain with actual water. I also added a billboard and added an advert that I made in my “Freak or Unique” project. I then created some basic picture frames 

Displaying your Work

 I displayed my work or art by making multiple frames using geometries of landscape square or portrait. I did this because it thought it would look cool and add to the overall aesthetic of the gallery.

Take it Further

Next time i would add more detail to the exterior of the gallery and overall add more flare to the gallery interior and exterior. I’d do this by adding a car park, a fence going around the whole gallery and also i’d add a garden at the back of the gallery.

1/6 Scale Extraterrestrial Combat Unit Rifleman Kitbash. XCOM has been a massively important game for me and I’ve been yearning to make a figure influenced by the game’s aesthetics. The base is an OD flight suit with black body armor and an OD vest. To replicate the look and feel of XCOM helmets I picked the MICH 2001 which looks great with headphones. I milled the face shield out of a plastic sphere and attached it to the helmet with watch screws. The backpack I took off my old BF4 RU medic build. The patches were made by Patches of Pride. REVIEW IN PROGRESS

When it first leaked earlier this year that Ubisoft and Nintendo would be teaming up to create a video game starring Mario and the Rabbids, many people were understandably… skeptical. It didn’t seem like the most natural of fits, and the hints that it might also be an RPG made it even more unconventional. But when the game had its official unveiling during E3 this past summer, people seemed to get on board with the unusual premise. Critics were impressed with their hands on time (our own Adam not withstanding) and were anxious to see more. Now after months of speculation the game is finally here and to our surprise it’s actually… really good!

The premise of the game is silly and the story pretty inconsequential to the action. Some Nintendo super fan is developing a pair of VR type goggles with the ability to merge two items into one. Something obviously goes sideways and the worlds of the Rabbids and the Mushroom Kingdom are smooshed together into a weird amalgamation of the two. Now Mario must team up with his friends and a series of Rabbid doppelgängers to track down the Rabbid responsible for it all and with the help of their robot guide BEEP-O, restore sanity back to the world.

The game is a turn based strategy game that will feel familiar if you’ve played games like XCOM. You pick your squad and wage war on a grid based battlefield, taking turns against an army of ever evolving Rabbids until you complete your objective. Your goal can differ from round to round, from defeating a set number of opponents to making it to the other end of the stage in one piece. The also game introduces a steady stream of new enemies to keep things interesting, each with new behaviors and abilities to keep you on your toes. Just when you think you know what to expect, a new foe will appear and throw off your entire strategy. The game does a great job of changing things up and keeping things interesting throughout the 4 different worlds you’ll explore.

It’s not just the enemies and objectives that offer plenty of variety, you can also customize your squad by purchasing a variety of creative and humerous weapons and unlocking new abilities using a skill tree. It’s a surprising amount of depth for a game full of silly characters and crude jokes. But for as deep as it is and as much strategy as it takes to play well, they do a good job of starting you out easy and slowly showing you the ropes. My daughter has played a fair amount of the first world and has managed to grasp the mechanics, but I fear that she’ll be in for a rude awakening once she advances to the later levels because this game gets HARD.

Early on in the second world it became clear that I was going to have to pay closer attention and strategize my plan of attack. And by the end of that world I was getting my ass handed to me if I made any careless moves. The boss of world 2 was especially grueling, and the first time I faced him I spent about 30 minutes working away at him only to be defeated and had to start from the beginning. It was frustrating, but I couldn’t be too upset because the defeat was all on me, all you have to do is plan ahead and study both your enemy and the battlefield and you’ve got a fair shot. Just be forewarned that this game might be a bit too difficult for youngsters who might want to play just because they know the Rabbids from the cartoons.

And speaking of the Rabbids, I do have to say that while I don’t find them TOO excrutiatingly annoying, they certainly don’t add anything by being in the game and I think they could have just as easily created a new group of characters from scratch to play the role and it would have been just as affective but without all of the ear piercing screams. But it is what it is.

One of the biggest compliments I can pay the game is in regards to the presentation. The visuals are bright and colorful and really make the characters pop, but the star of the show for me is definitely Grant Kirkhope’s soundtrack. If you’ve played games like Banjo Kazooie or Viva Pinata then you’re familiar with his work, and this is some of his best music to date. Both his original compositions as well as his takes on classic Mario themes are just outstanding and were a joy to listen to.

As I make my way through the final portion of the game, I look forward to seeing how the difficulty ramps up and what new enemies it’ll throw at me. Stay tuned for final impressions in the coming days!

Ubisoft has released a second character trailer for their upcoming Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle. The new trailer focusses on Rabbid Luigi. BWAAAAH!

The new trailer showcases a few of Rabbid Luigi’s special moves and abilities, just like the first character trailer which focused on Mario. The wait is almost over for the Ubisoft and Nintendo mascotte cross-over, Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle – just two more weeks. To keep us fans occupied until the game releases the publisher has started with a periodic release of character trailers, with Mario being the first and now Rabbid Luigi as the second. Who’s Next?

Rabbid Luigi is a defensive specialist who can leverage the unpredictable elemental forces that surround us all to great strategic effect. Check out the trailer and let us know what you think in the comments below.

The Ubisoft mascots team up with Mario and his friends in this turn-based-strategy game, in order to defeat all the Raving Rabbids and save the world. Mario + Rabbids roam the stages and confront their enemies in a mode that just is Xcom, and that is a really good move by Ubisoft Paris and Milan studios. Everybody carries a gun or weapon of choice and can make one move per turn. So you’ll want to get behind cover and shoot from the perfect spot.

The characters in your team each have different weapons they carry, and special abilities with a cooldown timer. The combat starts off relatively easy, but soon you’ll be introduced to complex Xcom tactics. Duck for cover and use your alley as a trampoline to move twice as far.

Although Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle sounds like the biggest mistake in the gaming industry this year, personally we think it could be the best both Nintendo and Ubisoft have to offer in 2017.

You can buy the game starting August 29th, 2017 on Nintendo Switch via the Ubisoft Store. It also comes as Limited Edition alongside some nice statues of those crazy Rabbids. The 3” and 6” figurines of Rabbid Mario, Rabbid Luigi, Rabbid Peach and Rabbid Yoshi are available to pre-order via the Ubisoft Store.
